Inspired by the bold vision of creating a community space, St. Marks Episcopal Church acquired the decaying Sweet Grass County High School and lot. Several years forward, Sheepherder Square is poised to add vibrancy to Big Timber’s downtown core – creating a true “living room without walls”, leaving a lasting legacy for our community.

The Square will be a place busy with activity - where friends gather to enjoy each other’s company, mingle and revel in our community’s tradition and area history.

The development of Sheepherder Square is one of the most important community development projects ever undertaken locally," says noted destination development expert Roger Brooks.  He continues "[i]n fact, cities around the world have developed their downtowns around a central piazza or plaza.  Programmed plazas have been the lifeblood of city centers for centuries and they are now more important than ever.  This is your Community Living Room.  This is not about tourism, but is about improving the quality of life for your citizens."
